Taking the indoors-outdoors Posted On 18 June 2021

Making the most of your space

With warmer weather approaching, now is the perfect time to re-vamp your outside space ready for entertaining. The first thing to look at is the size and orientation of your garden. What do you want to use the space for, entertaining (dappled sun or shade is often best for this), sunbathing (find the area which receives the most sunlight) or relaxing (dappled sun is again most suitable here)?

To make your outdoor space a true extension of your home, blending the style of your home out ensures continuity and blurs the line of what is indoor and what is outdoor. To create a relaxing patio area, choose some durable outdoor furniture and add an outdoor rug, perhaps carrying through a similar colour scheme from your living room. If you don’t want to spend a fortune on new furniture, wrought-iron garden furniture is cheap to pick up and can be quickly modernised with a lick of paint. Lighting makes all the difference outside, install up lights against your walls or fence for a dramatic look or choose a parasol lined with solar powered lights for a picturesque ‘starry-night’ effect.  Consider creating a covered dining space to protect yourself from both the sun’s rays and the inevitable spot of rain thus maximising the time you’ll be able to spend outside.

In order to create a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors, place durable house- plants near to French or bi-fold doors to draw the eye outwards. Outside, plant outdoor plants in pots that you have also used inside to instil a sense of continuity between your spaces. Invest in some outdoor cushions and have dedicated blankets for outside use to add a sense of cosiness to your space.

For a bold look, consider using patterned tiles outside. Porcelain tiles work just as effectively outside as they do in bathrooms and kitchens. They’re frost-proof and very low maintenance. Just make sure you choose ones which are labelled as being suitable for external use.

So, what are you waiting for? Create a new entertaining zone with your indoors- outdoor space.
