Motivation: It’s an attitude thing Posted On 25 February 2021

Are you struggling to keep your motivation up working from home? Here are some helpful tips to keep you at your best.

A lot of us have been working at home for nearly a year now. Some are lucky and have a natural motivation, while others may struggle, perhaps without other people in the office to bounce off you’re lonely, or perhaps with the limitless distractions on offer from working from home, you can’t stay concentrated, however, with a change in attitude you can boss home-working.

Change your behaviour first

Use brute force. Install distraction-blocking software on your computer, if possible, put your phone in a lockbox, hide the remote for the TV. Don’t procrastinate and turn your computer on first thing in the morning and start working straight away. Set yourself a timer and work in blocks. This way if you do turn the TV on after you’ve finished a block of work, it’s a treat – a reward if you please. But make sure you’ve set an alarm to know when to start your next block of work.

Keep teammates in mind

Remember those people you used to work with. Your team. Well, they’re still working too. If you aren’t keeping up with your own workload, they’ll probably be the ones feeling the pressure. Stick a Post-it note top your screen of your teammates who will suffer if you fall behind. Also, just because you’re not in the same office anymore, it doesn’t mean you can’t speak. Use Zoom, Skype, or even pick the phone and have a quick chat.

Reward yourself

Every time you do something good, whether it’s completing a project on time, putting out a really good piece of work, or helping one of your colleagues, give yourself a treat. It doesn’t need to be something big, it could just be a nice brew and a couple of biscuits, but by doing this you will be motivated to earn these rewards from yourself, and hopefully, finally get some real motivation when you are working from home.

Remember, working from home for a lot of people is a massive life change, however, without a good attitude and positive motivation alongside a little bit of strictness on your side, you may find it more of a struggle than initially thought.
