The closest title race in Premier League history comes down to the final day
Manchester City and Liverpool kept up their amazing battle to become Premier League Champions with wins over the weekend which will take the fight to the final day of the season. The two teams have been battling it out for the whole of the season with the two teams switching positions at the top over 20 times!
Vincent Kompany was the unlikely hero as he scored a 30-yard screamer against Leicester on Monday night to give Man City an all-important 1-0 win. Their third 1-0 win in the last four games puts them back to the top of the table by one point with one game left to play. The win was their 13th in succession and means a win on the final day will guarantee the title despite Liverpool’s valiant efforts to win their first ever Premier League title.
Liverpool had pulled off their own magic with an 86th minute Divock Origi goal on Saturday against Newcastle, which put them top of the league and the pressure back on Man City before Monday’s game.
Whoever comes second won’t take any joy from becoming the best-ever runner up in the Premier League era, amassing over 90 points, a record held by Manchester United since the 2011/12 season, when their tally of 89 points wasn’t enough to topple Man City.
Liverpool will need to win at Anfield when they host Wolves on Sunday and pray that City drop points on their visit to Brighton. Neither Wolves nor Brighton has anything to play for, with Wolves already securing a 7th spot finish. Brighton escaped relegation on Saturday when Cardiff lost to Crystal Palace.
Liverpool has the trickier game, even if they are at home, as Wolves have been the surprise package of the season and have three straight wins themselves.
Brighton, have struggled in front of goal all season, being the joint-third lowest scorers in the league, they don’t concede too many goals, but looking at the fixtures it is hard to see anyone but Man City taking the trophy home with them on Sunday.
Liverpool staged an incredible comeback against Barcelona on Tuesday night, while Man City have had a week to rest before Sunday. Will Liverpool be able to come together for one last push, or will they be drained from their miraculous win at Anfield.
Liverpool will need their key players firing, so attacking duo Mo Salah and Sadio Mane will need to be on form; while Man City will need their captain, Vincent Kompany as inspiring as ever, leading from the back to get them across the line in what may be his final game for the club.
Liverpool will play Tottenham in the Champions League final on the 1st June and Klopp will have to decide whether to stick or twist in regards to resting some of his best players to avoid injury. However, Klopp doesn’t seem the type to play it safe.
Either way, you can guarantee that it will be a day of twists and turns, and will we have any injury time action like Aguero’s goal in the 2011/12 season?
