Home is where the heart is Posted On 17 June 2021

Even if you can’t remember which box you put it in!

Moving house is well known to be one of the most stressful things you can do, yet the lure of a new home is almost impossible to ignore. With the 30th June ‘end of stamp duty holiday’ deadline fast approaching, many are frantically rushing house purchases to take advantage of this money-saving opportunity. So, what can you do to take the stress out of the situation?

1) Preparation is King

Use an online packing calculator to give you an idea of how many boxes you’ll need and then either get scrounging from family, friends and local supermarkets or order a packing set from Amazon and get the number of boxes you need delivered to you flat packed, well in advance. Contact your utility companies as soon as you know you’re moving- this is a job that can be easy to forget.

2) Marie Kondo everything!

Does it spark joy? No? Purge it! For large items, schedule a pick-up ahead of time to avoid you worrying about how to transport them. Many charities will take larger items if you give them advance warning.

3) Move smart

You might be feeling ambitious and decide to move yourselves. If so, think carefully about the size van you’ll need and how long you’ll need it for. If you do decide to get some help, compare at least three removals quotes for the best deal. Be flexible and consider moving mid-week to get the cheapest prices.

4) Packing Tips

The number one priority is to protect your belongings whilst packing but there are ways to cut some corners and speed up the process. Firstly, label all boxes as soon as you’ve sealed them with the room you intend them to go to in your new home. This will save so much time when unloading. Use your linens and towels to wrap delicate items. Take a photo of the back of your tv- it can be a nightmare remembering which cable goes where when you arrive. Don’t unload drawers if you don’t need to- simply pull the drawers out and secure their contents with plastic wrap.

Finally prep a moving essentials bag with a change of clothes for the next day, any medications, basic toiletries, important documents and essential chargers. This is your grab-and-go bag on move day itself.
