Hamilton wins fifth world championship Posted On 29 October 2018

With two races to spare, Lewis Hamilton has won his fifth Formula One world championship, which places him in joint second place with Juan Manuel Fangio on the all-time list

 

Hamilton is now behind only Michael Schumacher on the all-time list, who won seven and who currently tops the list.

Hamilton required only seven points at the Mexican Grand Prix to win the championship, and achieved twelve. He began in third position on the starting grid, but tyre issues ultimately forced him to finish in fourth place, earning him enough points to race past his rival Sebastian Vettel in the table, who was a major contender for this year’s title.

The legendary Brit racer then set about performing the now-customary doughnuts on the track in celebration of his win, after being congratulated on the team radio by none other than actor Will Smith, who said to him: “That’s how I taught you, that’s how you do it, that’s how you drive!”

Rival Vettel told the crowd afterwards that Hamilton’s title was “well deserved”, before sharing a hug with him while the winner waved to fans and spectators.

After his win, Hamilton said: “I feel very humbled by this whole experience. It’s something I dreamed of but I never thought I’d be standing here as a five-time world champion.

“I’m so grateful to everyone who has helped me be here. It’s definitely been my best year, I feel.”

And it’s no wonder why his most recent triumph is among his most satisfying, because he has outscored Vettel despite having driven a slower car for much of the season.

Hamilton now leads all of his contemporaries, with Vettel on four titles and Fernando Alonso on two. The McLaren which the now 33-year-old won his first championship with in 2008, was not the fastest car on the grid. With Mercedes he has since gone on to win the world championship title in 2014, 2015, 2017, and now 2018.
