Frozen 2: Where’s all the snow? Posted On 25 February 2019

The first trailer for Frozen 2 was released earlier this month. Here’s a recap on all things Frozen, and a few of the theories for the upcoming sequel

The original Frozen film was a cultural phenomenon that broke records all over the world. It won two Oscars, two Golden Globes, two Grammy’s and is the number one highest grossing animated feature film of all time. Children still sing along when it’s on – much to their parents’ delight!

Since its release back in 2013 it has become not just a film, but also its own franchise. A musical was released in 2017, followed by a Broadway show in 2018. Two mini feature films have also been released, ‘Frozen Fever’, and ‘Olaf’s Frozen Adventure’ and Frozen toys even knocked Barbie off her perch as the best-selling toy in 2014.

Frozen 2 was officially announced in 2015. Original stars Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff are back and joined by newcomers, Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown. Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee are directing again with Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez on song-writing duties.

The new trailer was viewed a record-breaking 116.4 million times in 24 hours, making it the most viewed animated trailer of all time! But what have we learned so far?

Our heroes are on a quest in a strange land where it is autumn and not winter. There is no snow in the trailer and the whole video has an autumnal feel to it. Are our heroes trying to change the seasons? Are they trying to bring on winter because the new land is stuck in a state of permanent autumn?

The poster, which was released before the trailer, shows four crystals forming a snowflake, each with a different design. One theory is that each crystal represents a different seasonal princess with magical powers. The crystals from the poster match the ones in the trailer, and the design on one crystal look very similar to a design on Anna’s dress.

Could Anna be the summer princess, bringing a nice duality to her relationship with her winter princess sister Elsa? In the trailer we also glimpsed two new characters. A young girl, watching a boy being lifted by the wind in a golden wood. Is this the autumn princess with superpowers of her own? If this is true, then who and where is the spring princess?

Like any good trailer, this one raises more questions than it answers.

Frozen 2 will be released on the 22nd of November this year.
