Why you need a dining room and how to decorate it

With open plan kitchens flooding the market, you could argue that the traditional dining room is losing its place. The dining room should however maintain its established place of prestige in your home.

Having a separate dining room offers a space which is always ready to host guests. Upon their arrival, it welcomes you to the civilised world of adult conversation leaving the craziness and mess of the kitchen behind. If you’re attempting an ambitious dish it also allows you to perfect this away from the watchful gazes of your guests. Any cookery mistakes are also for your eyes only.

Having a separate dining space allows you to create a specific ambience, low hanging ceiling lights over the table or well as candles to create a softer light. Your choice of furniture is vital in this room so opt for chairs which are both stylish and comfortable as dinner parties usually last well into the night. Brightly coloured chairs can act as a colour pop against otherwise neutral decor. In smaller spaces circular tables are worth considering as they will be able to fit far more guests around than rectangular ones. One trend worth checking out is epoxy resin, creating marble or river-like effects running through your table. This is a bold statement and features as a work of art on its own so would pair best with neutral artwork in contrasting or complementary colours as opposed to art which adds in another pattern or busy design. You could also throw a bid to the quirky with an up-cycled table- these add a more casual feel to your dining room and range from pallet tables to repurposed whiskey barrels.

When it comes to walls, you can really do anything as long as you consider how they will complement your furniture. White walls are the simplest option, a natural light reflector, they’ll help your space look bigger and provide a neutral base allowing you to choose almost any table, chairs and artwork. If choosing for a pop of colour on your walls, stick to a concise colour palette, neutrals like grey and navy work well with natural materials like leather and stone.

When it’s all over, simply usher your guests out, close the dining room door and deal with the mess in the morning. Perfect.
