Clap for carers is back but with a different name Posted On 07 January 2021

During the first 10 weeks of the pandemic, the nation saluted the NHS and carers with a clap every Thursday, this week it returns…

The weekly applause for front-line NHS staff and other key workers last year was one of the most endearing and emotional scenes at 8pm every Thursday. Originally a one-off on the 26^th March, people nationwide stood on their doorsteps beating pots and pans to support our NHS staff.

After proving popular it was expanded to cover all key workers and continued every Thursday for 10 weeks, with millions of people taking part including the Royal family and Boris Johnson. There were few eerier scenes that summed up the first lockdown than the silence in our towns and cities being broken by the din created by the nation and the memory alone is enough to still trigger a swell of emotion.

The founder of Clap for our Carers is Annemarie Plas, a Dutch national living in London, who yesterday tweeted:

“We are bringing back the 8pm applause, in our 3rd lockdown I hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us. Carers teacher, homeschooling parents, those who shield and ALL who is pushing through this difficult time! Please join & share!”

She also said, “I fully acknowledge that things are now worse than ever and some people might not feel an applause is appropriate, but I also know how much it meant to millions of people last time, not just to our carers but to our neighbours and communities.

“We all need to stay connected and be there for each other and we all deserve a round of applause for what we have gone through and can expect from the coming months.

“When people clap for all our heroes on Thursday, they should also clap for the heroes directly in their own lives, those whom they have personally found to be just incredible individuals.”

This time it is to be called Clap for our Heroes, and it will begin this evening at 8pm.
