Cheapest supermarket of 2019 revealed Posted On 20 January 2020

Sainsbury’s has been crowned as the cheapest supermarket.

A study by the Which? Consumer group revealed that the supermarket chain came top after tracking thousands of branded grocery prices across the six major supermarket chains throughout 2019.

The data was collected by monitoring online pricing of branded items that were available in all supermarket chains; which means those included in the data were Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco, Asda, Waitrose and Ocado.

Products included in the tracking of 53 common grocery products included bread, crisps, butter, cheese, cleaning products, pet food, soft drinks and other everyday items such as Andrex toilet tissue and Weetabix breakfast cereal.

The results were as follows:
1: Sainsbury’s, £107.01
2: Asda, £107.65
3: Morrisons, £109.13
4: Tesco, £112.40
5: Ocado, £116.40
6: Waitrose, £117.81

“Your weekly supermarket shop can have a significant impact on your wallet, and the start of a new year is a good time to look at your household spending to see if there are areas where you can save money,” suggests Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services. “Our analysis shows how important it can be to shop around to ensure you get the best price for your groceries.”

The top three in 2019’s results were also the main players in a similar survey ran for 2018; although for that year, Morrisons clinched top place, followed by Asda and then Sainsbury’s.
